Applying for Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry

Every year a significant number of our students successfully apply for courses in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry. In 2019, 26 students successfully secured places to study Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry. These courses require specialised applications and so we provide a wide variety of opportunities and support to help students prepare their applications.

The table below summarises the support available in Years 12 and 13:

A meeting with our Careers Advisor, Ms O’Brien, to discuss career options.
Attendance at our University Lecture Taster Evening, which includes talks on Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry and other related courses within these fields.
Work experience at the end of Year 12. Many students choose to use this time to gain experience in their chosen sector, from shadowing cardiologists to volunteering in a care home.
Volunteering in serving and caring capacities, such as at care homes, primary schools and charity shops, is encouraged through our enrichment afternoon.
A talk for all prospective applicants during our HE launch days, where students can find out more about the application process.
A one-to-one meeting with the Director of Sixth Form or one of the Heads of Year to discuss applications and gain personalised feedback on personal statements.
Interview preparation and workshops which include: A Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) Evening, run by St. George’s Hospital, a Medics Information Evening, lunchtime workshops run by Nonsuch alumni, where they discuss their experiences of applying for, and subsequently studying, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry, a UKCAT Preparation Workshop.
A series of ‘University Preparation Workshops’ which focus on helping students to develop the thinking skills that are often required during interviews.
A one-to-one mock interview and personalised feedback a few weeks prior to the interview. Where possible, these mock interviews are arranged with people from within the healthcare field, including GPs and practising physicians.
Support after conditional offers have been made in order to help students to meet the conditions of their offers.

Medical Society

We have a growing Medical Society, run by current Medicine applicants, within which students discuss topics including current news in healthcare, UCAS personal statements and application techniques, and other healthcare-related careers. This society is supported by a student-run blog and is aimed at students from Year 10 to Year 13.
